This webinar will present an overview of the process and resources associated with the development of Green and Sustainability Knowledge and Skills statements in six Career Clusters™ that are now available for use by states and local school districts.
Participants will learn the details of how the statements were developed, review the set of statements, and be provided information about how to access additional resources. The project was funded through the US Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education and managed by MPR Associates.

Today’s global economy demands a better-educated and more highly-skilled workforce. In communities across the country, career and technical education (CTE) programs are making a difference in meeting that demand by engaging students in authentic learning with real-world application, preparing them for further study and a career, and helping to fill jobs. Yet too many CTE programs are not results driven and lack the relevance and rigor students need to prepare for lifelong learning and a successful career.

In April 2012, the Obama administration released a blueprint for reauthorizing the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006, which is the largest federal program targeted to high schools. The proposal calls for a transformation of CTE around four core principles: effective alignment between CTE programs and labor market needs; collaboration among secondary schools, institutions of higher education, employers, and industry partners to improve the quality of programming; accountability for improving academic outcomes; and systemic reform of state policy to support innovation at the local level.

Join the Coalition for a College- and Career-Ready America on Thursday, May 31, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (ET) for a webinar featuring CTE and other education experts who will discuss the proposed blueprint, the appropriate role of federal policy in supporting high-quality CTE and what it takes—at the local level—to create programs that expand opportunity for students to be successful in college and a career while also strengthening the nation’s economy. Webinar panelists will also address questions submitted by viewers from across the country.

The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) is coordinating the state-led effort, which will complement and support comprehensive college and career ready standards, such as the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSI) in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The CCTC will build a common connection among states to help prepare CTE students for College and Career.

Forty-three states (including the District of Columbia and a Territory) have signed a declaration of support for the CCTC initiative, pledging their involvement in the development stage. Hear about the purpose, process, the progress to date, and information on how to get involved during the upcoming public comment period.

Webinars Focus on New CTE Courses, Global Partnership Strategies

Our partners at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) this week  is inviting the CTE community to join in on two free webinars. The webinars will offer insight into new developments in CTE courses and global partnership strategies.

Project Management for CTE—Life Skill, Job Skill, Certification Skill (Mar. 27 at 12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. PT): This webinar shares the latest in the development of PMforCTE, an initiative connected to one of the newest approved CTE courses in the state of Washington. Beginning with a pilot high school class involving Rotary and local businesses and a state-level program advisory committee, PMforCTE is responding to current learning needs driven by industry demand and the importance of 21st-century skills. Stakeholders will share their experiences implementing PMforCTE in a pre-engineering classroom, a summer work training program and a Jobs for America’s Graduates program. Register for this free event now.

New NASDCTEc Brief: Integrating the Common Core State Standards and Career Technical Education

NASDCTEc is releasing today an issue brief, Achieve and State CTE Directors: Integrating the Common Core State Standards and Career Technical Education, that describes a pilot project to help educators integrate the Common Core standards and Career Technical Education (CTE). Achieve and NASDCTEc jointly created the project to guide educators as they develop instructional tasks that integrate CTE-focused standards, the National Career ClustersTM Knowledge and Skills Statements, into their lessons.

The issue brief also features updates from State Directors in two states, Illinois and Nebraska, where the project is being implemented.
