Resources Available for NASDCTEc Webinar on Nontraditional Participation and Completion under Perkins

Resources are now available for a recent webinar on National, State, and Local Strategies that Work to Increase Nontraditional Participation and Completion under Perkins.

NASDCTEc sits on the advisory board for the STEM Equity Pipeline Project™, and this webinar discussed a research-based program improvement process targeted at nontraditional participation and completion. The National Science Foundation has re-invested in the project for another five years, and the presenters discussed the specific, high-impact strategies that State Education Agencies and Local Education Agencies are implementing to increase participation and completion rates, particularly for female students in STEM-related programs.

Resources Now Available for NASDCTEc Webinar on Career Clusters™ Crosswalks and the Crosswalk Validation Project

This webinar discussed the Crosswalk Validation Project and provided an understanding of why it is necessary use a validated crosswalk when trying to develop and implement programs of study (POS), career pathways, or, more, generally career preparation areas. In addition, discussion about the crosswalk uses for state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) in building linkages for career guidance and a discussion about the necessity for SEAs and LEAs to use a validated resource for reporting Perkins accountability requirements were featured.

The Crosswalk Validation Project was a two-year long project led jointly by the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) and the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education (NRCCTE). The Crosswalk Validation Project focuses on updating and refining the original national crosswalk (known as Table 7 on www.careertech.org) used by SEAs and LEAs for career guidance as well as Perkins accountability.

Today’s global economy demands a better-educated and more highly-skilled workforce. In communities across the country, career and technical education (CTE) programs are making a difference in meeting that demand by engaging students in authentic learning with real-world application, preparing them for further study and a career, and helping to fill jobs. Yet too many CTE programs are not results driven and lack the relevance and rigor students need to prepare for lifelong learning and a successful career.

In April 2012, the Obama administration released a blueprint for reauthorizing the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006, which is the largest federal program targeted to high schools. The proposal calls for a transformation of CTE around four core principles: effective alignment between CTE programs and labor market needs; collaboration among secondary schools, institutions of higher education, employers, and industry partners to improve the quality of programming; accountability for improving academic outcomes; and systemic reform of state policy to support innovation at the local level.

Webinars Focus on New CTE Courses, Global Partnership Strategies

Our partners at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) this week  is inviting the CTE community to join in on two free webinars. The webinars will offer insight into new developments in CTE courses and global partnership strategies.

Project Management for CTE—Life Skill, Job Skill, Certification Skill (Mar. 27 at 12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. PT): This webinar shares the latest in the development of PMforCTE, an initiative connected to one of the newest approved CTE courses in the state of Washington. Beginning with a pilot high school class involving Rotary and local businesses and a state-level program advisory committee, PMforCTE is responding to current learning needs driven by industry demand and the importance of 21st-century skills. Stakeholders will share their experiences implementing PMforCTE in a pre-engineering classroom, a summer work training program and a Jobs for America’s Graduates program. Register for this free event now.

Partnering for Global Impact—A Case Study in Success (Mar. 28 at 12:00 p.m. ET/9:00 a.m. PT): Learn lessons on how to build global partnerships from this case study on workforce development, international connectivity with community and technical colleges and industry.
