Achieving Excellence: What’s New at SIRDC?

Greetings from the great state of Texas and the Statewide Instructional Resources Development Center (SIRDC)!

Our team is once again looking forward to presenting a breakout session at Achieving Excellence in CTE: The National Career Clusters® Institute. We have added lots of new free lessons, teacher online courses, and resources to our website for use this coming year that we are anxious to share with you. Yes, everything on the website is still free, no username, password or credit card required! SIRDC is funded by the Texas Education Agency through a Perkins state leadership grant awarded to Stephen F. Austin State University. The purpose of this project is to develop and provide free instructional lessons, resources and professional development for Texas instructors teaching 25 courses in the following career clusters:

There are currently over 280 instructional lessons published on our website http://cte.sfasu.edu/with additional lessons published monthly. Each lesson includes, in addition to the basic components, suggestions for special needs and ELL students, connections to core subject matter, handouts and activities, reading and writing strategies, CTSO and service learning ideas, and much more. NASDCTEc Will Unveil the Common Standards for CTE at National Career Clustersâ„¢ Institute on June 19

The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc) will release the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) — a set of rigorous, high-quality CTE standards to be shared by states– at the National Career Clusters â„¢ Institute  on June 19, 2012.

Forty-two states, Washington, DC and Palau participated in the development of the CCTC. The development of the CCTC was a multi-step process that incorporated input at various stages from approximately 3,500 individuals representing K-12 education, business and industry and higher education from across the nation.

When:  Tuesday, June 19, 8 a.m. – 9 a.m.

The Institute is an annual summer event that offers a range of seminars and workshops highlighting model CTE programs across the country that are aligned to the National Career Clusters Framework™.  More than 800 secondary and postsecondary educators and administrators, workforce development and industry partners, and counselors will attend. The NASDCTEc Spring Meeting, an event in which CTE State Directors from across the nation convene to discuss public policy issues, will run concurrently with the Institute.

The Spring Meeting Career Clusters Update Shared by Dean Folkers, NASDCTEc Deputy Director Included Nationwide Effort to Revise the Career Cluster Knowledge & Skill Statements to Align with the Common Core

Dean opened the session by informing attendees to register for the upcoming 9th National Career Clusters Institute, which will be June 20-22, 2011 in Atlanta, GA. With the theme “A world of career options – one simple framework”  the Institute will have many exciting, timely and relevant breakouts, speakers and will provide opportunities for attendees to share promising practices and learn what’s new regarding Career Cluster Implementation across the nation. Dean also shared an inside peek at the new careertech.org website revision, along with new products available to promote and enhance instruction at the local level.

Dean shared a key vital project underway, the revision of the Career Cluster knowledge and skills statements, including the steps of the process which will eventually provide a common basis for assessment across all programs of study that will link to the common core, which, once completed, can be utilized nationwide.
