House Building Project In Process
As a primary project of a course called House Build at the Juneau-Douglas High School in Juneau, Alaska, students develop authentic construction skills by working on a real house building project.
Students participate in all building phases of a new house construction including job site safety, site preparation, foundation, floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, exterior and interior finish work, electrical and plumbing.
The project is a joint effort of Juneau-Douglas High School Career and Technical Department, Juneau School District teachers and staff, and many partners in the surrounding area, including local businesses, industry, labor and workforce development groups.
Student Creativity with Wood
To show progress on construction, the House Building Class hosts a blog. The House Building Project instructor is Craig Mapes.
 The Woodworking class also hosts a blog which promotes the idea of wood as art, with student creating pieces around their own personal style.
Creative Woods Instructor Colin Dukes said “For the students, it’s alot of fun, we get healthy community support as well–which makes it possible to have these types of programs.”
