As the nation has watched the news unfold of the horrific mass shooting that took place on January 8 in Tucson, Arizona, taking the lives of six Arizonans including a nine year old child, State Director Milton Ericksen has shared that “20 year old Daniel Hernandez, a former awarding winning HOSA student and graduate of Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona came to the aid of critically wounded U.S. Congressional representative Gabriela Gifford that day, with no concern for his own safety.  His quick and decisive actions, utilizing both leadership and technical skills learned in HOSA, are being credited with saving her life until emergency medical attention could arrive.  He has been hailed as a hero by everyone from President Barack Obama to his former Sunnyside classmates.  He rejects these accolades stating that many Tucsonans also helped tend to the wounded and subdue the gunman accused in the attack.” 

Ericksen further adds that “Daniel epitomizes the best of America’s youth today.  His selfless act further illustrates the importance and relevance of the leadership that millions of career technical education student organization members, in this case HOSA, learn and then demonstrate in their communities every day throughout the country.  Arizona is very proud of Daniel Hernandez.”
