Youth Explore Career Information From the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Friday, May 21st, 2010

It’s never too early to introduce school-age kids to choices they may consider in their future careers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Web site for kids, Exploring Career Information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, provides introductory career information for students in Grades 4-8.

The kids’ site is designed to give a quick introduction to a career, and most of the material on the site has been adapted from the Bureau’s Occupational Outlook Handbook—a career guidance publication for adults and upper-level high school students that describes the job duties, working conditions, training requirements, earnings levels, and employment prospects of hundreds of occupations. The occupations are organized into 12 categories, many directly tied to career technical education.

ACTE Conference: Career Clusters and Counseling

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Last week I attended ACTE’s Annual Convention and Career Tech Expo in Nashville, TN.  While I was there, I presented a session entitled “Using Career Clusters as a Framework for Successful Counseling.”  I was happy to have a turnout of about 25 people, mostly school counselors.

I first addressed some of the challenges facing education today and suggested that career and guidance counseling could offer potential solutions to these problems.  Next I turned to the cluster model and talked about how counselors could use cluster interest inventories to help students identify their career interests and then use the pathways models and plans of study to help students figure out which classes to take to reach their goals.  Finally, I gave examples of work that schools in Colorado, Nebraska and New Jersey are doing to integrate the clusters framework into their career guidance efforts.  During my comments about Delsea Regional High School in New Jersey, I was pleasantly surprised when a woman in the back of the room raised her hand and said that she was from that high school and was working on implementing the very program I was talking about.  She took a few minutes and gave the audience more detailed information on how the school is aligning their curriculum and counseling to clusters.

Counselors as CTE Stakeholders

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Choosing a career is probably one of the biggest decisions a person makes.  How does a student, of any age, make a sound decision?  What are the knowledge and skills needed to achieve postsecondary and career success?  How does one navigate through the sea of career information?  The answer: A comprehensive guidance program coupled with a rigorous CTE program.

NASDCTEc has collaborated with the American School Counselor Association to author Counselors as CTE Stakeholders, a brief that highlights the integral role that school counselors, in conjunction with a CTE program, play in successfully guiding students through the maze of secondary and postsecondary options so that they are successful in their chosen career.  The brief looks at ways that CTE and school counseling can benefit one another to accomplish their shared goal of student success.  It also showcases three states – Nebraska, Missouri and Utah – that are examples of effective collaboration between CTE and Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling.

You can access a copy of the brief on our website at: www.careertech.org/show/publications
